Being a candidate for UNESCO world heritage list, Iznik (historically known as Nicaea) is a small historic town still enclosed within its ancient walls surrounded by a beautiful landscape. The historic urban layout of the town is still visible with its grid settlement plan remained since the Hellenistic Period and monumental structures from the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Now, town is most famous with its pottery and tile making, known as the Iznik Çini.

The idea of a community house for elderly people has developed during the field trip, after interviews with local people of Iznik. The need for accommodation for the old-age was the problem the was encountered.

During the design process, the building formed up as not only a solution for the urgent need of sheltering but also a social gathering place that allows youth, children and elderly - a variety of age groups - can spend time together.

Following the strict Earthquake regulations of Iznik, the project forms a low-rise hub in respect to modern design principles of ACCESSIBILITY - SUSTAINABILITY, and historical context of Iznik. The aim is to create an atmosphere that invites locals to gather, rest and live.
