Sense Or? is an interdisciplinary project at the intersection of installation art, interactive media art and performance art.
Drawing an analogy between the aftereffects of individual experience of trauma and collective experience of censorship, the project plays around the concepts of self-censorship, aesthetics of censorship, somatic effects of unspoken, unnamed agony, being oppressed and oppressor, being silent and silencing…Through an interactive digital medium, can we discover the ways of connecting through performativity and create a possibility for collective healing in a ritualistic manner?

How Installation works:
The installation sets an initial scene where the audience sees displaced audio-reactive images which are animated by using the software: TouchDesigner

The project has 2 moods: installation mood, and live performance mood. Both are happening on/around a white wall. During the installation mood, the audience will be interacting by touching/tapping Electro-conductive textiles that are placed on the wall.

During the live performance sessions there needs to be enough space in front of the wall; for a performer: around 2,5 meters, and for the audience: enough space to sit around the performer.
The strips on the wall are planned to continue on the ground as well, with the aim of creating the possibility of participation during the performance.

Concept

Silence is older than the ‘voice’. To make a sound, to utter, you must expend energy. Though silence comes naturally, it is there already, it is in between every voice. It infiltrates into every line easily, and sometimes even captures the lines and takes their place. Therefore, it is hard to defeat ‘the silence’ and make the voice.

But what about being silenced?  When being silent is not of choice anymore but more of a state that is imposed by an outer force, the subject is no more silent but is silenced. A silenced subject is not in charge of her own voice; her words are lost, she loses the connection to the ‘self’, feeling repressed, till a point where she can no longer feel anything: ‘numbness’, ‘nothing’…

As the creature with the highest adaptability among the species, we humans have evolved to adapt to even the toughest conditions and succeeded in surviving under those circumstances. We can adapt to the heaviest psychological conditions, even the most repressive regimes' most repulsive policies, bravo to us. Our nose adjusts to the long-lasting stinky odors by avoiding them after a certain point. We get used to whispering in silence and seeing in the dark.

We are sure of one thing: We survive, but at what cost?

Drawing an analogy between the aftereffects of individual experience of trauma and collective experience of censorship, the project plays around the concepts of self-censorship, aesthetics of censorship, somatic effects of unspoken, unnamed agony, being oppressed and oppressor, being silent and silencing…Through an interactive digital medium, can we discover the ways of connecting through performativity and create a possibility for collective sharing? In a ritualistic manner?

After the longtime state of disconnecting where only ‘surviving’ has been enough, can we connect to the ‘self’ and each other’s selves?

How does a silenced body move?

Tapping as a way of activating the Senses:

degree of tapping and the number of poeple who are bodily
connected changes the value of conductivity, thus the variety of visuals activated.

"The aim is actually to change the patient’s physiology, his or her relationship to bodily sensations. At the Trauma Center we work with such basic measures as heart rate and breathing patterns. We help patients evoke and notice bodily sensations by tapping acupressure  points... While reliving trauma is dramatic, frightening, and potentially self- destructive, over time a lack of presence can be even more damaging."

Silencing Politics, Self-censor...

The most vulnerable parts of society are the first ones to be attacked by the oppressors. That is why we, as all the oppressed entities of society, are connected to each other through our vulnerabilities.

The project “Sense Or?” is an interdisciplinary artwork that works independently as an installation but also be supported by the live performance sessions enriching the imagery of the subjects of self-censorship, trauma, silencing. The participative
approach to performance aims to create a space for emotional exchange and collective healing.

"Immobilization is at the root of most traumas. When that occurs the DVC is likely to take over: Your heart slows down, your breathing becomes shallow, and, zombielike, you lose touch with yourself and your surroundings. You dissociate, faint and collapse"

Is there a relation between the body and trauma?

What are the traces of censor on the body?
